Who is eligible for the draft?
- Generally, high school players if they have graduated
from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college.
- College players from four year schools who have
completed their junior or senior years OR are at least 21 years
of age. College players who have dropped out of school can apply for
the draft by writing the commissioner's office no later than March
20th.
- Junior college players regardless of how many years
of school they have completed. A selected player who enters a junior
college cannot be signed until the conclusion of the school's baseball
season.
A player who is eligible for the draft and
is passed over by every club becomes a free agent and may sign with
any club.
How many rounds to the draft?
If I am eligible for the draft what happens if I sign with an agent?
- You lose your college eligibility.
How does a player find out what he can do and still keep his eligibility?
- You may have an adviser, but the NCAA
has some very specific
rules regarding this. You may not have an agreement, verbally
or in writing, to be represented by an agent for the purpose of marketing
your ability or reputation. Any individual can give you advice concerning
a proposed contract but that individual may not represent the student-athlete
in negotiations regarding that contract. Yes it can be confusing.
Do you currently have players on a forty man roster?
- This seems to be the most commonly asked question. Yes, we also
have players at the AAA level, A level, rookie ball as well as Japan
and Korea.
Can I go play in Japan? Korea?
- If you are a Minor League or Major League Free Agent you are certainly
eligible to play in Japan. However, Japanese Professional Baseball
limits the number of foreign players on each team. Also, it is very
difficult to succeed in Japanese Professional baseball the Japanese
Clubs are very selective of the type of player they deem a candidate
to play. Korea is similar to Japan with smaller payrolls. Both are
generally looking for certain styles of players that usually have
Major League service time and have been impact players in the Minor
Leagues.
How many certified agents are there?
- The MLBPA indicates there are over 300 certified agents.
